Knitting Abbreviations

Patterns are full of abbreviations and they can get confusing. I've also used knitting abbreviations when I've been explaining how I've made something and how I've gone about knitting it. Here I've put together a list of abbreviations that are useful to know and should help:

k = Knit
p = Purl
sl = Slip stitch
sts = Stitches / st = Stitch
dec = Decrease
inc = Increase
beg = Begining
tog = Together
[ ] * = Repeat the instructions inside the brackets, or after or between in stars (*) as many times as indicated.
alt = Alternate
cont = Continue / Continuing
foll = Follows / following
LH = Left hand
RH = Right hand
rem = Remaining
rep = Repeat
RS = Right side of work
WS = Wrong side of work
tbl = Through back of loops
yon = Yarn over needle
yrn = Yarn round needle

k2tog (dec1) = Knit next two sts together (decrease by one)
k1 tbl = Knit st through back of loop
kfb = knit into front and back of the next st

p2tog (dec1) = Purl next two sts together
pfb = Purl into front and back of the next st

psso = Pass slipped stitch over
sl1 k1 psso = Slip one stitch, knit one, pass slipped stitch over
sl1 k2tog psso = Slip one st, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over
sl2 k1 p2sso = Slip two stitches, knit one, pass slipped stitches over

pwise = Purl wise
wyif = With Yarn In Front

st st = Stocking Stitch
g st = Garter Stitch
